Blabberize is a free service that allows users to upload their own images, record their voices using a microphone or telephone, and create an image that looks like it is talking.  Easy to use and able to have a finished product in minutes, this tool is great for any level learner.

Chirbit is a free online tool for audio sharing.  Users can record, upload, listen to and      share sound bites easily.  Users can record directly, use text-to-speech, or upload their own audio file then embed to any site.

Vocaroo is an incredibly simple audio recording tool.  Students simply open the webpage, click record, click stop, and then can embed their recording into any webpage or share the URL.

Voki is a free tool that allows users to create their own talking avatars.  Users can create their own character using different hair, clothes, accents, etc., then record what they want their avatar to say (either with a microphone, text-to-voice feature, or by using a cell phone).  The avatar is then saved and can be shared in a number of ways including email, embedding them into a website or blog, and on social media such as Facebook.

Julie K. Marsh is a long-time educator, a PhD candidate at The College of William and Mary focusing on curriculum and educational technology, and the Coordinator for Distance Education and Instructional Design at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing in Richmond, Virginia.  Her current research interests include Design Thinking, Community of Inquiry, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), creativity in the classroom, open sourced educational resources, and participatory culture.
